Omar Thompson - Biography

Born in Miami, Florida I earned my B.A. degree in Art Education from Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Florida and received my M.F.A. in Ceramics from Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. I currently teach Ceramics and Ceramic Sculpture at Florida A&M University and maintain a private studio at Railroad Square Art Park in Tallahassee, Florida where I actively work on private and public commissions. I recently designed a ceramic wall mural for the Martin Luther King Jr .Center /John Hope Elementary School in Atlanta Georgia and have works in the collections of N.B.A. basketball player and art collector Elliot Perry of the Phoenix Sun's. My work can also be found in the private and corporate collections of Cassandra Mills of Haute Face Cosmetics and Motown Records in Los Angeles, California; The Atlanta Life Insurance Co; Singer/songwriter India Arie of Atlanta, Georgia and The Anheuser Busch Company in St. Louis, Missouri.  I have taught at the college level for Parsons School of Design and The Cooper Union School of Art in New York; The New World School of Art in Miami, Florida; Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia and The Marist School (Private) in Atlanta, Georgia. I have been honored with several awards and exhibitions locally and nationally to include The High Museum of Art, Stanford University, and the Birmingham Civil Rights Museum, along with Best of Show honors and numerous first place awards. I have also been nominated to WHO'S WHO IN AMERICA 2006 and will be published in an upcoming book of Artist to watch in the fall of 2009 by AI Production, New York
